Unique heart surgery performed in Pirogov hospital

Cardiac myxoma represent more than 50% of benign tumors of the heart. Their main localization — the left atrium. The right-sided affects extremely rare. In the majority of cases Myxoma grow slowly, and the clinical picture, typical mitral stenosis usually occurs only when the tumor and the development of large mitral occlusion, arterial embolism, tumor fragments.

Surgical treatment mix started in 1954 in our country, the first operation to remove the myxoma of the heart was performed in 1962. Surgical treatment for this condition of the heart is always performed under extracorporeal circulation.

RAMS Yu.L.Shevchenko team of experts and the Pirogov Center for the first time in the world could do this sort of interference patient 75 years of open-heart surgery in the general circulation of the occlusal stops for 3 minutes.

The need to define this method caused technical difficulties in removing a large myxoma of the right atrium associated with the inability to connect the heart-lung machine because of the danger of destruction (fragmentation) and the latest development of fatal complications — pulmonary embolism. The only possible method of saving the patient had an operation in a short circulatory arrest.

Tech intervention required precise organization of interaction of all participants in the operation: an anesthesiologist, surgeon, nurse, and others. Circulatory arrest time was 3 minutes.

This technology has long been known and used when no operations have been developed under extracorporeal circulation.

We academician JL Shevchenko has experienced this type of intervention: in congenital heart disease (atrial septal defect, ventricular septal defect), foreign bodies cavities of the heart (the fragments, bullets, catheters, electrodes and other infected).
