Drought in Russia

July 11, 2013. As the head of the Ministry of Agriculture of the Russian Federation, Nikolai Fyodorov, according to preliminary estimates by the drought in Russia killed nearly 2% of the total sown area of crops — 1.45 million hectares.

Due to abnormally high temperature, which was held in Central Russia in June and early July, several regions of the country were subjected to drought. It is about Lipetsk, Voronezh, Ulyanovsk, Saratov, Orenburg, Samara, Kurgan regions and Bashkiria, a number of districts of Chelyabinsk, Rostov, Volgograd and Astrakhan regions, Kalmykia and the southern part of Tatarstan, said "RIA Novosti".

In the thirteen districts of the Orenburg region a regime of emergency. According to the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the area, at the moment was lost 362.8 thousand hectares of crops, and in the future, this number may increase to 1.3 million hectares. In two districts of Kalmykia as a regime of emergency: lost 22.5 thousand hectares of crops, including in the area Maloderbetovsky — 5,982 thousand hectares, accounting for 72% of the total sown area of the district, according to the MOE. Because of drought, lack of rain, temperatures in excess of long-term average by 3-4 degrees regime of emergency introduced in the two areas of Chuvashia.

Dmitry Medvedev at a meeting on harvesting noticed that maybe the country will have to purchase up to 6,000,000 tons of grain at harvest forecast of 95 million tons.
