Volcanic activity in the Red Sea

Volcanic activity in the Red Sea Natural Disasters

As a result of the eruption of December 19, 2011 in the Red Sea fishermen witnessed lava fountains up to 30 meters. Seismic activity in the region is not limited to a single eruption, and December 23, a group of small islands off the west coast of Zubair Yemen, a new island.

This part of the Red Sea rift is over between the African and Arab tectonic plates, which is the process of actively forming the ocean floor. Zubair Islands, Yemen envelopes from the north-west to south-east, stand out above the sea level on the ground shield volcano.

MODIS, NASA satellites scanning spectroradiometer "Terra" and "Aqua", recorded the smoke columns 20 and 22 December. At the same time tool for monitoring the ozone layer (OMI) on NASA's satellite "Aura" showed elevation of sulfur dioxide, a sign of the eruption.

Yet at the event raised some questions: satellites is not found abnormal temperatures or ash clouds. Perhaps the eruption was extremely short and small, or, more plausibly, in the region to military actions, or there was a fire, which from a distance was mistaken for lava flows. On the other hand, the volcanic eruption in the Red Sea not uncommon, despite the fact that they are out of sight.

Five-kilometer Jebel Zubair — the largest of the ten islands that rise from the deep plateau ridge of the Red Sea. Plateaus and volcanic valley, forming the islands and shoals located towards the north-north-west to south-south-east parallel to the ridge. During the phase of eruption explosion followed a period of marine erosion. Next on the youngest islands Zubair (Central Summit, Saba and Heykok) occurred release solid basaltic lava. In the 19th century, similar effects were observed on the island Saddle.

It is the largest of the ten islands and shoals. The last stage of the eruption with lava formation was found on the islands of Zubair, Central Summit (south-west of Zubair) and Saba (north-west of Zubair). Earlier volcanic activity was observed in the 19th century on. Saddle, the largest island of the three, located on the top left of the figure.

The edge of a young outgoing board actively shapes the outlines of the Red Sea, they may achieve a new ocean as Africa and the Arabian Peninsula, earlier was a continent, now relegated from each other.

The eruption of a nearby volcano-island of Jabal al-Tair overnight sensation in 2007 after 124 years of dormancy. Eight people were killed as a result of volcanic eruptions in the Afar Depression of Ethiopia and Eritrea, volcanoes in southern Yemen and Saudi Arabia.
