The tremors were recorded at 17:55 local time (9:55 MSK) at 870 kilometers north-east of Whangarei. Center lies at a depth of 34.8 kilometers.

Information on casualties or damage were reported. The threat of a tsunami were reported.

In July, 57 kilometers from the capital, Wellington earthquake of magnitude 6.5, which led to a temporary halt commuter trains and power outages in many areas of the country.

In February 2011, a powerful earthquake in the New Zealand city of Christchurch killed 185 people, the city center was almost completely destroyed.
