Stonehenge — the mystery of an ancient civilization

22.03.2013

Stonehenge is in English Wiltshire and is an impressive stone structure built in the Neolithic Age. Medieval Legends called builders Stonehenge
magician Merlin (character legends of King Arthur), and even the devil himself. In modern times, there were versions that builders Stonehenge were the Romans or Celts. But modern scholars have found that construction of Stonehenge was over 1500 years before the Celts came to Britain.

His builders know a little bit — they had no written language. We do not know how these people called themselves, so we use to refer to them code names of archaeological cultures. Furthermore,
construction of Stonehenge
took place in several stages, for nearly a thousand years (from about 3100 to 2100 BC). Stonehenge in English Southwest has been listed as World Heritage by UNESCO in 1986.

The first version of the future Stonehenge, built by people archaeological culture "Windmill Hill" was a two excavation of the shaft with a moat in between. The bottom of the ditch was trough the bones of deer and oxen, which clearly indicates no religious character of the object. Subsequent studies showed that the term culture of "Windmill Hill" should be regarded as arbitrary, since it is hidden under several different archaeological cultures. Apparently, this means that the ground
Stonehenge
was a common religious center for several tribes living in the area. Second Stonehenge was built of wood and its construction seems to have been close to a modern stone Stonehenge.
Stone Stonehenge people have built "Wessex culture." Perhaps some religious ceremonies were held in these places before the construction of the first (ground) Stonehenge, but they should not have survived. Everything points to the fact that Stonehenge was an important cultural and religious center for a long time.

By the beginning of XX century Stonehenge was in poor condition. Many of the top plate and some base plates fell, often bearing plates strongly bent. Restoration Stonehenge was in several stages and lasted intermittently from 1901 to 1965. A number of scholars criticized the methods of the restoration as not corresponding to the original technology
construction
object. For fixing the supporting stone slabs used in the restoration of concrete, which in the Neolithic Age, of course, was not. In 2004, a project to resettle badgers living close to Stonehenge,
in other parts of England. Earthmoving activities of these animals destroyed cultural layer under the monument and led to damage to the artifacts present in the body.

Home the mystery of Stonehenge is to assign the object. Scientists have put forward different versions, but it should be borne in mind that such an ambitious and revered object could certainly be used for several different purposes, so a different version of the destination Stonehenge should not necessarily be regarded as refuting each other. The basic version is that Stonehenge
— The ancient observatory. But the term can be misleading. Neolithic people hardly used Stonehenge to study astronomy — most certainly, they celebrated the holidays here winter and summer solstice, using stone construction Stonehenge as a coordinate system for easy observation of the movement of the sun. According to other versions in Stonehenge a cemetery for nobility and it was a place of pilgrimage for people eager to heal from injuries and illnesses. Well, the religious center and really could bury the noble people here and to work skilful priests — healers. Today Stonehenge is a place of pilgrimage for tourists from around the world. With all the alterations and renovations these stone slabs have been around for four thousand years. It seems that time has no power over them, and Stonehenge survive even Apocalypse.
