The U.S. is afraid that Russia could become an alternative ideological center of the world

Sergei G. Kara-Murza

As reported by the media, Sergey Lavrov said that Russia will respond to U.S. moves unfriendly. This is a good occasion to talk about the relations between the U.S. and Russia as a whole, taking more or less long period of history.

The United States and Russia in the XIX century, were seen as the two superpowers, which offered the world different projects. The United States was created by the Protestant dissidents from Europe, which can be called fundamentalists specific project. In this sense they were "more Europe than Europe itself." They were the bearers of messianism. And there was a rise of Russian Orthodox messianic philosophy after the war with Napoleon. There was a sense that it, too, comes with the project, which was reflected, in particular, in the classical Russian literature. In the world it is very carefully read and study.

Apparently, Russia raised the messianic sense of American elite

Prominent Russian spiritual authorities have talked a lot about America, speaking of it as an alternative. About U.S. said Pushkin, Gogol, and Slavophiles, Herzen. Russian attended in America: Alaska, California. Moreover, a very large proportion of the local population of Alaska became Orthodox. Subsequently, Hollywood took a lot of film on Russian themes: for example, there were many versions of "Anna Karenina", and at the end of perestroika, when the Soviet Union weakened, they took a series of historical films, which featured Russian in America. Apparently, Russia raised the messianic sense of American leadership.

From 1990 to 1993, often held joint seminars in the United States and Russia, I took part in them. With the American sovietologists could talk confidentially. They are very interested in our attitudes toward America, while they themselves are very well treated Russia, very respected our lifestyle and habits. However, they were forced to write articles in the anti-Soviet, and they are very worried. We, in turn, is also well treated by the Americans, and they knew it.
However, it's not about them, and about the higher elite who commanded the United States. She is very small: they write that it is 500 families that are closely related through private clubs, Masonic lodges, college and financial networks. Constantly present within the elite Russian theme, and was part of the elite, who tried to overcome the anti-Russian vector.

Answers to key questions are very different in the United States and Russia

I think, especially at the beginning of the Cold War, they were given such tirades against which the Reagan term "evil empire" was just nonsense. There was an element of anti-Russian psychosis and, in my opinion, it appears the waves. It is necessary to be an expert in American reality to explain these outbursts. I had read a lot about the cold war, and it was evident that the bursts are uneven.

Why now is a splash? All 90 years Americans believed that the reformers changed the ideological matrix in Russia. But when Putin came, it turned out that a large part of the population, overcoming the effects of trauma 90s, began to claim their own philosophical installation.

There have been surveys. In 2011, on the subject made a major report at the Higher School of Economics, and it was shown that the answers to the main questions are very different in the United States and Russia. For example, there was a question: "Do I need to give more freedom to private business or enhance the role of the state in the economy?" In Russia 74% of it to increase the role of the state and in the U.S. — on the contrary, more than 70% in favor of private influence.

It turns out that the modernization of the liberal type, as expected, did not take place in Russia. In the United States fear that Russia will pretend to be the center, given vectors of alternative ideas of the United States.
