What is it?

Deforming osteoarthritis — a chronic non-inflammatory disease joints (articular cartilage). It is based on premature aging and degeneration of articular cartilage due to diminution of the main component of cartilage substance — proteoglycans.

Of all the diseases of the joints is the most common, according to statistics from osteoarthritis suffers from 10 to 16% of the world population. Most often, the disease affects women aged 45-55 years. And after 60 years of deforming osteoarthritis occurs in almost 100% of people.

Causes

The most common cause of osteoarthritis — the discrepancy between the load on the joints and their "safety margin". The culprits of this condition may include: being overweight, standing work, incorrect posture, exercise (jumping, running or weight lifting). Presumably, are also important: metabolic and hormonal substances, deterioration of blood supply to the joint, a genetic predisposition to diseases of cartilage, older age, injuries, diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and psoriasis.

What's going on?

Osteoarthritis is a rapid aging of the articular cartilage. It loses its elasticity, the joint surfaces become rough, there are cracks on them. In some places, cartilage can be erased so that the exposed bone. With the loss of cartilage bone growth occurs at the joint surfaces — there is a fixed deformity of the joint.

Osteoarthritis most commonly affects the hip (coxarthrosis) and knee (gonarthrosis) joints, interphalangeal joints of the hands, although the disease is not insured or one joint.

What way?

Onset of the disease is as follows: gradually fades painin the joint during movement. With osteoarthritis of the hip pain is coming from the upper thigh to the knee and hands, which is especially felt when walking. Those who suffer from osteoarthritis of the knee pain down the stairs, and if touched the shoulder joint, it is difficult to raise and lower the arm.

In general, the disease is characterized by the occurrence of pain under the influence of daily physical activity, and for the period stihanie night's rest. Short-term "home" pain occurs shortly after the peace and against the backdrop of physical activity.

Gradually disease progresses: any movement begins to cause intolerable pain, and the joint is deformed and lose mobility. At this stage, the disease can only be removed acceded to diseases such as arthritis inflammation, relieve pain, but to restore the damaged cartilage is impossible.

Osteoarthritis usually develops slowly and begins with the destruction of one of the joint, but after a while the process is included in other joints, especially those that are taking on an increased load to unload initially ill joint.

Diagnostics

If the pain in your joints, and besides, it does not pass within a few months you should call to a rheumatologist or orthopedist.

After the examination, the doctor will assign additional research:

  • complete blood count;
  • Ultrasound of the joints;
  • rentenografiyu joints.

Treatment

Patients need to limit the mechanical stress on the affected joint, therefore recommended during acute polupostelny mode.

For the treatment of osteoarthritis of the most commonly used anti-inflammatory drugs and hondroprotektory (drugs that protect cartilage).

Application physiotherapeutic techniques reduces pain. This uses ultraviolet, electric currents, alternating magnetic field electrophoresis phonophoresis drugs on the joints. To strengthen the muscles is recommended to use electromyostimulation. Patients will not prevent therapeutic exercises for the joints.

If the joint is irreversibly lost its function as the sole treatment becomes prosthetics.
