What is it?

Disease Alzheimer's disease — often in conversation it is not quite true is called senile marasmus — a disease in which certain cells of the brain (neurons) as a die, resulting in the development of senile or senile dementia (dementia).

Disease Alzheimer's is the most common cause of dementia that develops in elderly and senile age. The first symptoms may appear after 40 years, and after 70-year-old age incidence rate reaches 30%.

This disease more common in poorly educated people, with unskilled occupations. A person with a high IQ are less likely to face the manifestations of Alzheimer's disease, for the reason that there exists a greater number of connections between nerve cells. So with the death of some cells lost functions can be transferred to others who have not been previously used. The most common age-related dementia affects women — perhaps the reason for this is the higher life expectancy of women: many men simply do not survive the disease Alzheimer's.

What does it happen?

In Alzheimer's disease brain is the deposition of protein in the form of "senile plaques" and the formation of so-called neurofibrillary tangles consisting of damaged neurons, — both of these processes lead to the destruction of nerve pathways of the brain.

While still not clear what exactly causes these changes, but in recent years scientists have managed to isolate specific genes responsible for a person's predisposition to Alzheimer's disease.

And what is interesting: the disease is more common in low-educated people, with unskilled occupations. A person with a high IQ are less likely to face the manifestations of the disease, for the reason that there exists a greater number of connections between nerve cells. So with the death of some cells lost functions can be transferred to others who have not been previously used.

What's going on?

The disease begins with the rising of the memory. Early stage may go unnoticed to others, as man, pointing at the first symptoms of the disease, tries to hide them. With the increasing loss of memory a sense of confusion, misunderstanding, bewilderment. Gradually man ceases to navigate the place and time of his memory falls accumulated knowledge, experience, skills, and are forgotten by the next first-time event, and then more distant. Disturbed recognition of shapes, colors, persons sense orientation in space. It may affect, for example, randomly and asymmetry handwriting: letter accumulate in the center or at the corners of the page vertically. It is becoming increasingly unclear.

When disease starts to progress, you need to take every opportunity to support the ability of the patient to self-sufficiency, reduce its isolation from the others, to try to prevent the development of depression. For example, can help new and better chosen glasses, improved hearing aids, easy to use radio, books with pictures and large letters.

The factors that exacerbate the symptoms of Alzheimer's disease include:

  • unfamiliar places;
  • stay alone for a long time;
  • meetings with a large number of strangers;
  • Darkness (requires adequate lighting even at night);
  • infectious diseases;
  • hot weather;
  • receiving a large number of drugs.

Diagnosis

For the diagnosis of this disease, you must have the following characteristics:

  • imperceptible onset of the disease,
  • it steadily progressive course,
  • the exclusion of all other causes of dementia.

To this has now developed a special questionnaire to determine Alzheimer.

For more accurate diagnosis must also undergo electrocardiography, electroencephalography, computed tomography study of the function of the thyroid gland.

Treatment

If your elderly relative had symptoms similar to Alzheimer's disease manifestations, hurry to spend it examined by a neurologist.

Special products, heals Alzheimer's, does not exist yet. However, there are medications that ease symptoms of the disease and greatly hinder its development.
