What is it?

Ankylosing spondylitis — a chronic, progressive disease, manifested by inflammation of the joints of the spine. Long-term inflammation leads to a violation of motion in joints. As a result, spine is practically immobile.

First it diseasedescribed the Russian Neurologist Vladimir Bechterev. In his honor, ankylosing spondylitis, and got its second name — the disease Ankylosing Spondylitis.

Ankylosing spondylitis suffer mostly men aged 20-40 years, although the disease begins in the late school age, about 15 years old.

Causes

The causes of ankylosing spondylitis are uncertain. Apparently, the disease develops in people who have a specific genetic predisposition and certain genetic characteristics of the immune system. Play a role chronic infections (especially of the intestine and urinary tract infection).

What's going on?

With the development of the disease is progressive damage to the joints of the different parts of the spine. Primarily disease Spondylitis affects sacroiliac joint (joint sacral spine with pelvis). Then, in the inflammatory process involved and the intervertebraledge-vertebral joints. If the process is not time to take control, the patient can significantly disrupt the mobility of the spine, down to complete immobility.

What way?

The first signs of the disease are not sharp pain in the sacrum, sometimes also in the groin and in the area outside of the thighs. These feelings are most pronounced in the morning and at night. Sleep is disturbed patient. In the morning, his back felt stiff, hard to get out of the sick bed. Gradually, sometimes a few years, pain and stiffness in the neck and back, while in the morning and felt discomfort. The slopes of the sides, back and forth difficult and painful. Deep breathing, coughing and sneezing also cause pain.

The disease Ankylosing Spondylitis characterized by the increasing restriction of mobility of the spine, its shortening. In the absence of treatment disease can lead to complete immobility spine, the patient acquires a "supplicant posture" (bent at the elbows, hunched back, bowed head, legs, slightly bent at the knees).

What is it dangerous?

In addition to limiting the mobility of the spine in the absence of treatment is the spread of the disease to other organs and systems.

Diagnostics

Suspected illness allow the following symptoms: pain in the lumbar region, lasts more than three months and not decreasing at rest; chest pain and a sense of tightness; difficulty breathing. In the presence of these symptoms should consult a rheumatologist and the appointment of additional research methods. The main importance in the diagnosis of a spinal X-ray or Magnetic resonance imaging of the joints. Be sure to designate the general and biochemical blood test.

Treatment

Currently, the treatment of ankylosing spondylitis used non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, glucocorticoids, in severe disease are shown immunosuppressants. In addition to drug therapy used physiotherapy, chiropractic and physiotherapy. Therapeutic exercises and kinesotherapy (treatment with physical activity) should be carried out systematically and daily 1-2 times a day for 30 minutes, to improve the condition of the patient. Tissue Back Massage reduces pain in the spine, reduces muscle fatigue, strengthens muscles. With proper medication, regular self-study risk of complete immobility spine or other parts of the skeleton deformation is greatly reduced.
