Agnes Barto was not only a wonderful children’s poet, over her shoulders — a lot of work to reunite families separated by the war. Almost nine years of his life Agnes L. dedicated search people based on their fragmentary childhood memories.
«Long live free Spain!»
For the first time Agnes Barto faced fascism in 1937. Then she was sent to Spain as one of the delegates of the International Congress in defense of peace and culture. The meetings were held in Valencia, Barcelona, Madrid besieged by endless bombardments. The fascist troops were about three hundred meters from the border of Madrid. The delegates recalled how the old woman wept in the small villages, hugging them. They showed pictures of their foreign brothers, husbands and sons who went to the front. One case in particular crashed into the memory of the poet: «… I will always remember that we went to the woman held out a card black-eyed boy of Yati, she closed the boy’s head with his hand, wanted to explain that the child decapitated by a shell. She raised her hand, showed one finger, which meant that she was left alone like a finger, all of her relatives were killed. The woman wiped her eyes and cried: "Viva Espana Libra!" ("Long live free Spain!"). She left Spain — her motherland! Then the woman began to sing. The tears and songs, songs and tears … Perhaps there in Spain, I particularly understand the power of the revolutionary songs … «.
Agnes L. hung in front of his desk child’s picture, which depicted a fun house. Above the house a large orange sun was shining. This picture hung in Madrid’s sole survivor after the bombing of a building wall. The soldier held out his Republican Barto and said, «Take, comrade, in memory of the family, which light is the sun.»
During the Congress the bombing continued. In the sky now and then flashed beams of searchlights, and here and there were heard gunfire. Barto recalled how during dinner at the restaurant dishes rattled, fell from the tables. With a sad smile, picking up the pieces waiter said: «Again, in your honor.» The Nazis knew where to stop members of the delegation, someone handed him the light signals from a neighboring house. During a particularly strong bombing Konressa participants had to go down to the lobby, as appropriate basement in the building was not.
It took four years, and Agnes Lvovna went to the shelter is already in his native Moscow. The Great Patriotic War. The family of the poetess was evacuated to Sverdlovsk. Her husband, Andrei Scheglyaev as eminent power engineer was sent to the Ural Mountains, on one of the power plants. Agnes L. with children and grandmother stopped in Sverdlovsk, and Andrei went on.
City defense plants was full of evacuees. Poet remembered that at times it seemed as if visitors are more than Sverdlovsk. Everywhere on the streets sounded different reprimands Russian speech: Leningrad, Moscow, Ukrainian.
Many Moscow writers also stopped in Sverdlovsk. Among them were Yevgeny Permyak, Olga Forsch, Anna Karavaeva, Boris Romashov, Marietta Shahinian. Writing staff became House Seal. Hence, the authors were leaving in small groups in hospitals, military factories here carried articles and essays for newspapers factory. Literary elite had the opportunity to be published in the newspaper «Ural worker», as well as to act on the radio.
In Sverdlovsk, Agnes Barto met Paul Bazhov. That’s how she remembers their first meeting: «… I remember that from the bustling corridor I entered the suddenly quiet room in which sat an old man with a low long silvery beard. It was deepened in some lists of names which stood against many notes: "I need a cushion". "I need a pass to the dining room". "No housing". It was Pavel Bazhov here I saw him for the first time. He asked how to arrange my family, I have not visited in the schools? Looking at the lists, he called the name of one of the Moscow writer, asked what he had written. I knew that the literary works in the genre of small forms, but particularly, could not say anything. Bazhov looked at me in surprise, even with reproach: how do I do not know the work of his fellow-Muscovite ?! «.
During the war, Agnes L. appeared on many radio and printed in newspapers, war poems. In 1942, she even had a war correspondent of «Komsomolskaya Pravda» on the Western Front. However, on his young heroes and readers Barto never forget. So, Agnes L. got the idea to write about teenagers Urals, who stood at the defense plants machines as adults. But the topic of her master did not succeed: there was no understanding of the medium, material, characters and so on. Then Paul Bazhov advised the poet to get a working specialty — for example, learn the profession of a turner, to better understand the psychology and the interests of the artisans. Six months later, Agnes L. received a discharge. He was, however, low, but closer to the theme of the poet. In 1943 Barto wrote the book «There is a disciple» — a young Urals working at the bench. Each of them could say without exaggeration: «I put a mark in the distant dugout, I put a mark of the new tanks.»
«Find a person»
It is an unexpected turn took the life of the poet after the 1947 poem «Zvenigorod», dedicated to children’s home, as well as those who care about these guys. The work has played a huge role in the life of many families. In 1954, the book read woman, whose eight-year old daughter Nina, as the children in the poem, lost during the war. My mother was convinced that her baby died. She wrote Agnes Lvovna «Read "Zvenigorod" and I thought maybe my Nina still alive, grew up in a good children’s home … and the first night I did not cry. » This letter referred to the Barto organization dedicated to people search. Eight months later, Nina found, she met with the mother. Moreover, a note in the Journal of the story, a young man read. He liked the picture of a girl he is interested in her fate and went to work in Karaganda, where she lived with her mother, Nina. Young people met, liked each other and got married. When Agnes L. a few years came to Karaganda, she met with a happy family: Nina’s husband, grandmother and two children. Journalists call them «family, born of poetry.»
After the publication of this remarkable meeting to Agnes Lvovna began to dozens of letters from people with similar fates. They asked the writer to help in the search for missing children in the war. And Bart wondered what to do. Transfer to a special organization of them all was impossible, as required for an official search of accurate data, and if the child is a little lost, he often could not even call his name. Children were given new names, their age is determined by the doctor. Of course, growing up, they could not find their loved ones, because they do not know who they are coming from. A new mother did not know the names of the child and where he had thrown the fate. And then the poet came up with an interesting idea: she has decided to take advantage of the children’s tenacious memory. Children often do remember something seen all your life, you need only select those points that will help parents learn their child.
The idea was a success. Radio «Mayak» was broadcasting from now on children’s memories all over the country. At first glance, minor household items and routine events helped reunite entire families: «We went into the forest with her mother on the raspberries, and met a bear, and when I ran, then lost a new shoe»; «My father came to say goodbye, I hid under the table, but I learned from there. Father was dressed in a blue tunic with planes … a huge bag of apples (red, large) he brought me … drove a truck, I firmly holding a toy cow. » Broadcast «Find a man» helping people to find each other after years of separation. According to the recollections of childhood Agnes L. searches conducted nearly nine years. Nine hundred and twenty-seven families have found happiness through its program.
Barto was grateful to people for their sympathy. «It contributed to the search for effective compassion and hot willingness thousands of listeners to respond to the grief of others — wrote the poet. — It is necessary to talk about someone’s fate clouded by war, as people of all ages and professions hurried to report any detail that could help in the search. Letters, letters, constantly going to the transmission (70-150 emails every day), I rediscovered the brightest features of the Soviet character: kindness, generosity of mind, generosity … infinitely dear to me the letters and found themselves, and those who are heartily offered their help in the search. These letters and brought joy, the one that is essential to children’s poet, so that he could remain true to its readers a merry … «.
The first book of prose Agnes Barto, written in 1969, was called — «Find a man.» It has withstood several reprints. This work is addressed to adults. This book — a reflection of a long search and experiences, collection of original letters of families separated by the war, the suffering of children and parents.
In 1973, director Michael Bogin directed the movie «I am man», who wrote the screenplay for Agnes Lvovna. The basis of the picture have been put on the true stories of people looking for loved ones that sounded in the radio program and described in the book Barto.
In 1974 Barto said, «No I did not assume that the transfer will live so long after it began twenty years after the victory. I thought: a year or two — and the memories will go on the decline. They began to fade, but not in a year or two, and only the ninth year of searching. «
«I remember a boy …»
A rotting L. with great love and warm recollections about the work to find the children: «… In 1965, in a radio broadcast "Find person"I was told, for example, that remember for a lifetime Nellie Unknown:"… The night, the roar of planes … I remember a woman, on one hand her baby, another heavy bag with things … We are running somewhere, forced his way into the crowd, I hold on to her skirt, and next to me running two boys, one of them seems to be called Roman …".
Three hours after the transmission of a telegram arrived from Theodosia: "Nellie Unknown Our daughter looking for her twenty-two years".
People began to find and very little memory. A young woman wrote:"I remember a boy Borya older than me, he told me to pull out a tooth. Tied a thread for a tooth and the other end of the thread pulled. The tooth broke, and the boy fell to me who he was, I do not know".
After the transfer of Borja was found, he recognized himself in the boy turned out to be the older brother of a young woman. Together with his brother was found and her mother … «.
