This stylists comfortable and characterful family home in Stellenbosch is filled with beautiful pieces that have a story to tell
A visit to stylist Evette Lombard’s home in Stellenbosch will have you greeted by her giant but gentle Great Dane, Kate. Just as welcoming is Evette, herself. Her house in De Boord, where she lives with her husband and two children, resonates with equal amounts of warmth. Representative of its owners’ mottos — work with what you have and what you can afford; make something beautiful within your means — the space is a colourful and eclectic mix of items that somehow all work together.
Having migrated from Pretoria to study fine art at the University of Stellenbosch, she’s made the small wine town her base. It’s inspiring because of its creative community, says Evette. What I love most about it is its history and «oldness» but also the young people who make it vibrant.
The property sits on what used to be a river bank and its nature is what attracted her to it in the first place. The house’s lived-in character also suits her unfussy temperament. Instead of seeking perfection, Evette prefers a fun space that doesn’t call her to be pedantic about mess or dog hair. Most of her furniture was passed down from her grandmother or discovered at vintage or second-hand stores in Paarl and Stellenbosch, while the walls are hung with her own paintings. Favourite items include a collection of ceramic pots, old tins and porcelain animals. There is history and story to the pieces — it’s a collection of everything that I love and objects that have travelled with me through the years,’ she explains. For Evette, happiness is found in life’s modesty and simplicity.
