Summer — a paradise for music fan, but at the brightest IMPRESSIONS should go to Europe.

In Russia in the summer — the off-season, pause. However, in recent years it insistently violates the festival Valery Gergiev, and now the festival Mikhail Pletnev. But Europe’s classical music festivals are held in every more or less self-respecting city. They vary in size and characteristics. In Lucerne — Luxury parade symphony orchestras and chamber music. In Aix-en-Provence — the largest opera festival. One of the best opera houses — the Bavarian State Opera — gives its own festival in Munich. Named Richard Wagner Festival in Bayreuth this year is dedicated to the 200th anniversary of the founder — but there is nothing to even try to get there. On the Cote d’Azur — entirely pleasant chamber music festivals, among them the famous Piano Festival in Roque d’Anthéron, where, ironically, there is no room and pianists have to endure when the sounds are mixed Chopin wind and surf.

But the most famous festival in Europe and in the world — Salzburg. It has everything — and the opera and symphonic concerts, chamber music, and avant-garde, and the Drama Theatre. Salzburg Festival is considered to be expensive and bourgeois. But this show of the highest quality — it attracts the finest conductors and soloists from around the world. On the conservative tastes are not oriented: setting usually dramatically modernizes opera librettos.

Care for the best tickets ahead of time, but to get to the many performances and you can come straight to the festival. Of course, in «Don Carlos» with Jonas Kaufmann, on the «Norma» with Cecilia Bartoli and «Joan of Arc» with Anna Netrebko tickets are sold out long ago. But there are still places to «Lucius Sulla» (one of the earliest operas by Mozart) with a rising star Olga Peretyatko on «Falstaff» by Verdi under Zubin Mehta and the modern opera Gawain (the product of a living classic of the British Harrison Bertvistla).

Programs in Salzburg are formed with the idea, they are based on a certain concept, which takes care of the intendant of the festival — it is now, Alexander Pereira, the former quartermaster of the Zurich Opera. For example, one called the symphony subscriptions Ouverture spirituelle, which can be translated as «spiritual discovery.» In it the great works of European culture, such as «The Creation» by Haydn and «Visions of Amen» Messiaen, coexist and overlap with Buddhist music from Japan, be it music or classical temple scores Toru Takemitsu and Toshio Hosokawa.

Among the stars of this year’s Salzburg Venezuelan Gustavo Dudamel, and invited it back to its miracle — Orchestra Simon Bolivar. And, as always, the best conductors in Europe — Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Riccardo Muti, Christian Tieleman, Mariss Jansons.
