ITS A SMALL WORLD

Your Own Toy Story

Remember the time when you were a kid and would create your own worlds with toys? Photography is the perfect way to bring them to life once again.

Juxtapose your toys with the surroundings to create interesting tales in the real world. Use superhero figurines, action characters or even your dolls to create whacky photographs. You can create more interest by including other miniature items such as vehicles, furniture and replicas of animals.

You can even turn these images into a cartoon series by choosing similarly styled images and creating a cohesive narrative.

Make It Look Real

The biggest challenge when photographing toys is making them look real. Most of the times, all you need to do is get the lighting right. However, sometimes simply going close to the subject can do the trick. Simplify this by applying the same rules of composition and technique that you would to portraiture and landscape photography. Seeing these plastic creatures come to life is a definite way to make the viewer gape in awe.

Experiment… and Learn Along the Way

One of the best things about photographing toys is that your model will never complain about being tired or shift their pose. You can direct the whole image to your liking and take as much time as you need in doing that.

This is also a great way to experiment with composition and lighting in a simple and cheap way in the comfort of your home. Eventually, you can apply the same learning to photographing people and making portraits.
