In 2023, you could be one of four Earthlings sent on a mission to permanently settle on the red planet-which makes you an alien
THE JOB INTERVIEW
Mars One is initially looking for four astronauts who will take the seven-month trip in 2023. It plans to send four more in the next two years. A stable of 40 trained astronauts will be maintained. Preparations in a simulated Mars base will be broadcast to the world.
SO ANYONE CAN BE AN ASTRONAUT?
Applicants must be 18 years or older;
Free from disease, dependency on alcohol, drugs, or tobacco. And should fit profile below
DO I NEED TO BE FRIENDLY?
Being a people-person does help, actually. Ironically being a test pilot doesn’t. Other characteristics are narrowed down to these:
Chris Hadfield was only the beginning.
The International Space Station commander singing David Bowie’s “Space Oddity” picked up a million Twitter followers— but a Dutch startup called Mars One has bigger plans for fame and fortune and the future of space exploration. They plan to send a manned mission to Mars, initially sending four astronauts in 2023. And it will all be televised. We’re talking a 24/7/365 feed when they get there, plus a worldwide talent hunt to select the astronauts before the first launch ever gets off the ground. Think something in between the Moon Landing and Big Brother on Mars, Survivor: Mars, America’s Next Top Astronaut, or The Real Desperate Housewives of Mars. Genius or madness? No one is sure yet.
As if that wasn’t enough drama for the human race (exploration! space! Simon Cowell! ), Mars One’s astronauts will live out the rest of their lives on the red planet with no way to return to our little blue marble. Despite that little detail, this hasn’t stopped tens of thousands from applying. Just a few weeks, the company received 78,000 applications from 120 countries. It expects to receive a total of half a million applicants by the time the application ends on the 31st of this month.
Are these Mars One guys really serious? Is it even possible to send humans to Mars?
EARTH-TO-MARS JOB DESCRIPTION
The first four astronauts will be charged with building a permanent settlement, so a lot of construction is involved, stuff like building the main living quarters or greenhouses.
IS MARS DANGEROUS?
Sure it is. There is very real danger of radiation. The air is 95-percent C02. And there are dust storms. Not exactly Survivor Caramoan, no?
making returning to Earth impossible. Bummer.
A YET-TO-BE-NAMED REALITY SHOW HOPES TO HELP RAISE THE
THE GUYS BEHIND MARS ONE
A Dutch non-profit organization not affiliated with any government, Mars One plans to use existing tech from third-party partners like Space X to get to Mars. Space X Falcon Heavy will be Mars One’s launcher and a modified Space X Dragon capsule will be used as a lander.
WHY ARE THEY DOING THIS AGAIN?
Mars One believes that it is imperative that mankind builds a permanent settlement on Mars. It hopes to inspire the current generation like the Apollo Moon landings inspired the generations before it.
There is currently no spaceship that can land on Mars, pick up an astronaut and send him/her back to Earth. Even if one were built, the astronauts would have adapted to Mars gravity (which is around a third of Earth’s),
