This season, beauty gets attitude!

If there was an enduring message from the A/W shows, it was how to get real! «The overriding feel was playful, not perfect,» says Maybelline makeup director Sharon Dowsett. «There were so many punk references. It feels more urban, less pretty»‘says Terry Barber of Mac. Brows are now a beefed-up natural shape (albeit not full-throttle -phew!). At Dior, lips were applied neatly, then the edges dabbed off to give a casual stain, but keeping the overall effect nice and edgy. «Put some red lipstick on, then take some off to make it look worn-in,» suggests Terry. Our top trend was the big, bad-ass black eye, clocked at Cavalli and Donna Karan. It’s all about the smoked-up lower lashes and waterline.

Hair was also real-world and nonchalant, complete with kinks and flyaways. «It’s about creating a perfect hairstyle and then pulling it about sporadically until you end up with something you really like,» says Eugene Souleiman of Wella. L’Oreal Professionnel stylist Anthony Turner summed it up: «Lose the brush and sweep your hair back with your fingers, twisting it up in a haphazard way, just as you do when you’re taking your makeup off at night. The less you think about it, the better».
